Tim Reaper - Teletext EP

Tim Reaper has released somewhere in the range of 15 EP’s over the last 5 or so years. So it's safe to say that I'm quite late to the party. But better late than never as someone once said. I've been trying to expand on my tastes over the last while and this jungle/breakbeat type thing appeals to me in one way or another. Tim Reaper's Teletext EP, released on the London based label Lobster Theremin Records, felt like the right place to head next.

Opener 'Anytime' shifts from balls to the wall breakbeat to lush sounding dream-like states at the drop of a hat. The vocal samples that drop in and out of the track are a nice touch. The effect placed upon them stretches the words in a nice way, to breaking point of sorts, placing them in the digital ether. It adds another slightly twisted dimension to the overall track. Reminiscent of an Aphex Twin or even a Squarepusher type of undertaking. The Teletext EP has a similar sonic palette to Sully's 'Swandive', of which I was a huge fan, which came out towards the end of 2020.

EP closer 'Give It 2 Me' is a great example of how to build a track. Piece by piece. Brick by brick. Create the first melody, or layer, and take it from there. It doesn't always have to be complex to be effective. The best way to make a move is keep it simple and and just build upon an existing framework. It doesn’t have to break barriers or move worlds to be great!

What you'll find on the Teletext EP wont break new ground or deviate too far from the rule book, but its nice to listen to nonetheless. Well executed and weaved together.
