Mount Eerie - Night Palace
P.W. Elvrum & Sun
Phil Elverum returns under the fruitful Mount Eerie moniker for the first time in five years. Night Palace holds a very weather-like unpredictability; from one moment to the next we could be on the end of a completely different story. Sentient in feel, Night Palace bolsters that unequivocal Elverum charm, ingenuity and artistic integrity.
The feeling out of creative feats can be an arduous process. Pulling on strings to no avail; the balloon pops upon arrival. The honey-like drip of a good idea presents itself as a rough-edged piece of dirt at first; let it wash itself in the sieve of solitude. Often times the idea washes away with the dirt but every now and then one, and if you're lucky, a few, will stick. Grip the ideas too much and you'll smother them, too little and they wither away. They'll decide when the time is right, you can only step back and guide them. It is effectively impossible to know when the good stuff will stick and who and what it will, in turn, get stuck to.
We're all floods in flux of experience, up-bringing, wants and needs, dreams and desires, interests, intent, appearance. Parts of us die with each step. Ideas and perspectives are shed. Night Palace feels like a sonic source in perennial re-birth. We're here and then we're not. Oozing a constant change in mood and affliction. Weathered by an uncompromising climate. Raised by environmental boundaries. A kaleidoscope of folked-up, atmospheric fuzz, forest floors and fluorescent sparks; deep woods of prickly bristles and thick foliage; campfires and quiet resilience; manifested electricity; powers perceived on the edge of sense. If 80-minutes of Mount Eerie sounds like something that resonates with your being, then Night Palace is sure to soothe, upset and distort your soul. We have one of the best that 2024 has to offer right here.
Night Palace is out now via Elverum's very own P.W. Elverum & Sun.
