Mac DeMarco - 2
Captured Tracks
October 16th, 2012.
Slacker-led lives were met their perfect soundtrack on this day in 2012. Mac DeMarco's debut signified that a subdued existence was worthwhile, and in many ways, one of worthy merit. 2 rained in a new era for indie darlings as Mac DeMarco set sail on a sea of somber jangle.
A records vibe can make or break a piece. Irrespective of the quality of the work, the essence it packs has the potential to harness its final feel. At half an hour in length, 2 is a short and sweet record to succumb to. Sit back in its baked essence. Deep breathes of warm, coffee stained demeanour should do the trick. Cast off your plans. Set your goals aside. Arpeggiated jangles gleefully lead the way. Rudimentary rhythms lay a solid foundation for spectacular guitarwork to flourish. Ear to ear the kaleidoscopic quality to the crystal clear, goofy guitarwork swims and spins around the listeners head. DeMarco's music has a calming quality to it. It puts the listener in a state of calm. Like an older sibling giving advice on a laid-back evening. It's an absolute joy to listen to.
Jangly pop rarely comes as well-rounded and well-performed. 2 pulls on the sophisticated strings of simplicity. It's straight forward nature would lead you to believe that much more was going on. Pulled back to the bare essence of pure pop, 2 is effective to an alarming degree. Simplicity is far more hard-hitting and sought after in comparison to technical wizardry. You could say that there's a complexion of complexity to simplicity. Knowing where and when things end is a skill in which masters of their craft embody.
Living a lackluster life shouldn't come at the cost of having a good time. Find the fun and incorporate it into the process of day to day existence. Loosen up a little. Put a swing in your step. Wake with the intent of living - even if a smile is as far as said intent reaches. Brave the seemingly inconsequential day as if it was your last.
