Portishead Trip-Hop Post-Punk

Portishead's second studio album was released on this day 25 years ago. Their place in the industry is well and truly cemented at this stage, however after releasing their debut 'Dummy' in 1994, a definite ringer for best album of the 90's, pressure to produce a record of similar quality persisted. Exuding a similar spirit to the debut, yet embodying a different animal, Portishead's self-titled album pulls on the potential Bond theme theatrics and furthers the bands knack for sonic cinematic experiences.

A dark, brooding atmosphere hangs heavy over Portishead - some things can't be shaken off. Intrinsic to their being, heavy hearts result in heavy arts - music noir, noir jazz. Draped with fears of the downright worst, Portishead's second album rings in a newfound level of despair and animosity. The future looks bleak, here's its soundtrack. Even the brighter moments are hung with dread. The dirt in Portishead's world holds onto its most scarring memories. Letting go isn't something that is easily done. Track titles like 'Mourning Air' are dead ringers for a sorrowful experience. A sacred time such as the morning, along with its universal splash of fresh characteristics, is turned into a place of regret and deep existential festerings.

Acts like Portishead may not release music every day - three studio albums and one live album in nearly 30 years isn't much to show for. However, quality will always persist no matter how little of it springs up. Consistency and quality being the rarest of commodities in any given world of endeavours - the music world being the rarest of places for these commodities to exist. Chasing shiny things doesn't steer Portishead's sights. They align with their own need for expression. It shows for itself.

Slow-burning. Like the roots of a plant blooming in slow motion. Slower than slow. Things that are worth the effort take time. The process cannot and should not be rushed. Things are done when they're done. Slow-cooking music. Years in the oven at low temperatures. The results are certain.
