Death Grips - The Money Store
Epic Records
April 24th, 2012.
The decade defining experimental trio of Stefan Burnett AKA MC Ride, Andy Morin AKA Flatlander and a drumkits worst nightmare AKA Zach Hill, released their magnum opus on this day in 2012. It's hard to believe that 10 years can go by so quick. The groups debut studio album spawned many off shoots and subsequent groups - it's influence being a major part of the aura surrounding it. The aura of Death Grips themselves furthering said influence further afield. Remaining out of the spotlight saves space for creative pursuits. Keeping your attention along the path of turning mind inside out is a redeeming one, but one difficult to stay on top of. Completely dismissing certain aspects of a process loosens up, and in some cases strengthens, other aspects of said process. In this case completely dismissing interviews and any other parts that pull away from the end product.
The 2010's owes a lot to the Sacramento trio. Opening doors that it wasn't aware existed, the flood gates began to ooze. You know how it goes, once opened it can't be closed. The essence of something, once extracted, remains in the open until the end of time. The seismic shift beneath the feet of Hip-Hop was cataclysmic in its altering state. Anything pre this albums release seemed distant in the past - a fresh page was firmly presented for the near future to be written upon.
Cementing their place as one of the most important and trailblazing acts of the last decade, the music scene is in debt for the insights and examples exhibited by the abstract nature of their being.
The Death Grips name will go down as a synonym for greatness. Take a fucking risk once in a while. Who's to say where it will lead. For things to be taken further, you have to take them further.
