Asian Glow - Cull Ficle
Asian Glow joins the burgeoning South Korean scene with second album 'Cull Ficle'. A warm embrace from nostalgia's own arms awaits the listener - akin to Phil Elverum and his ability to create sounds of solace. 'Cull Ficle' is home to an array of material - everything from acoustic tracks to shimmering shoegaze splendor is to be found - as the Indie Rock spectrum is well and truly represented.
Asian Glow has an interesting way of using instrumentation to convey emotion - producing obscure textures and iridescent colours in the process. Slight alterations on convention seem to be the most effective way to get something slightly aberrant to bridge the gap across into listening territory, while remaining distorted from the norm - 'Cull Ficle' does this effectively. As previously mentioned, Asian Glow has an air of Phil Elverum to his musical manner. Add Elliott Smith onto vocal duties and there you have it - Indie perfection. Serving as a retreat for days end Asian Glow has curated a music map of fervent comfort. A world of silver linings and golden tinted foliage lays out in front of you - not perfect, but what's necessary. Time away to recoup, gather and plan for the inevitable trials ahead.
Cull Ficle is spilling with soundscapes - engulfed by swells of sombre atmosphere - and laced with moments of mellon collie, joy and jubilation. It's a beautiful album to become familiar with once time has been spent within its presence. The talent on show here is exceptional. A bit of fine-tuning and a masterpiece may be at hand.
