Luna Li -Jams EP

luna li _ jams pop

The Jams EP is up and coming pop prodigy Luna Li's second EP, her first 'Opal Angel EP' being released back in 2017. She hails from Toronto and is a multi-instrumentalist and all-round affable character.

This short offering heavily reminds me of the funkier, more danceable, side of LCD Soundsystem if produced by Kevin Parker with his knack for strengthening thick groove à la Currents. Speaking of Kevin Parker the artwork is eerily similar to the back cover of Tame Impala's 2012 record 'Lonerism'. A coincidence I think not. An ode to a contemporary pop connoisseur indeed.

Luna Li joins the current bedroom musician club along with the likes of Weatherday. The only difference being the music, of course. The approach to the overall sound is a complete 180. The Jams EP has a modern sound, as in it's squeaky clean, but the underlying vibe is most definitely vintage. An up to date homage to days gone by. This could be seen as easy listening without taking away from the quality of the musicianship or the straight up fun feeling it radiates. It has an upbeat lounge-like quality. Kind of like what would be played in the waiting room for a TV show or something along those lines. A little pep me up without going into full-on territory.

Strings never fail to add an air of class to a work. They juxtapose the thick as treacle basslines in a heavenly manner. It creates space for the guitarwork to flourish, which it most definitely does. Luna Li would make for a great beatmaker. She has all the elements down. Tight-knit, an ear for melody and a feel for rhythm. The banging beats may come later, who knows.

Fans of the funk variety should check this out. Khruangbin are a band that comes to mind along with the aforementioned acts above.

Luna Li is going places. She wrote, arranged, recorded and mixed all the material. The potential for excellence is there.
