Arctic Monkeys - Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not
Domino Recording
The Arctic Monkeys released their debut album on this day in 2006. The Sheffield foursome became one of the first major acts to break through using the internet as a way of promotion. It proved to be a trailblazing move as 'Whatever People Say I Am...' became the fastest selling debut album in British music history.
It helps that the music within is worthy of this accolade. Matt Helders and former member Andy Nicholson lay fine foundations for Turner and Cook to intertwine, topping off the signature Monkeys sound.
The Monkeys seemingly began fully formed in a similar way to The Smiths. Both bands pretty much appeared and were already 'complete' from day one. It's one of those rare occasions that cant be explained. The joining of four minds and the output of one cohesive sound.
Turner would prove to be a songwriting powerhouse with his 'out for the weekend' prose. A cheeky chappy corner store wordsmith if you will.
